Three projects which promote local skills development and income generation in providing housing are finalists in the 2016-17 World Habitat Awards.

A pan-African training programme, ‘A Roof, A Skill, A Market,’ uses dried mud bricks to create vaulted roofs for houses, reviving an ancient Egyptian architectural approach to construction. The design, which uses local resources and skills, provides an affordable solution for communities in Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, Benin and Ghana. Through collaboration between these five countries, local people can share knowledge and ideas to increase opportunities for income generation.

In Afghanistan, the ‘Passiv Solar Verandas’ project trains local craftsmen to develop verandas for housing, creating additional living spaces and providing warm air significantly increasing quality of life for families. The use of low-cost but high impact technology helps to keep the design affordable, whilst increasing local knowledge and income generation.

The Kenyan project, ‘Promoting eco-sanitation in informal settlements’, enables marginalised communities to access basic services with the provision of bio-centres. The community development process enables local people to gain skills and training opportunities, while providing a source of income from the bio-centre and other services. This sustainable and effective solution to sanitation challenges also supports other development projects through reinvestment of income.

These projects all provide skills development opportunities for local people, whilst providing solutions to housing problems and generating income for the community. The two winning projects from our final 12 will be announced in early 2017.
