Empty Properties

Follow up

BSHF is working in partnership with a consortium of local authorities through the East Midlands Empty Property Forum, to tackle the issue of how to bring empty properties back into use to help address housing need.

As part of the follow-up to the consultation it held in June 2004 on 'Recycling the City: Unlocking the potential of empty properties', BSHF collaborated with the Empty Homes Agency to carry out a study into the comparative environmental costs of building new homes versus refurbishing existing dwellings. The report was published in March 2008.
We supported research, in collaboration with the East Midlands Regional Assembly and several local authorities across the East Midlands, into the attitudes of owners of empty properties. The aim of the research was to ascertain what incentives are most attractive to empty property owners in encouraging them to bring their properties back into use and to identify any obstacles that prevent empty property owners engaging with local authorities.
